Ambles Across
Godland.

100 sacred landscapes. Ancient stories. Unexplored places. One visual world.

The Project

Designing a visual journey through the sacred landscapes of Uttarakhand.

Ambles Across Godland explores 100 sacred landscapes across Uttarakhand — places shaped by mythology, memory, belief and centuries of cultural history.

Some are widely recognised. Others remain unexplored, with stories that are still unfamiliar to most readers.

The design needed to bring those different landscapes and narratives together without making the book feel fragmented.

The Challenge

How do you visualise a place you've never seen?

Many of the landscapes featured in the book were places we had never physically visited.

Some stories also belonged to periods so distant that reliable contemporary visual references simply did not exist.

The challenge was therefore not merely arranging existing images. It was imagining how these stories and environments could have looked, while creating visuals believable enough to live within the same book.

Individual visual elements were developed through AI-assisted image generation and then extensively combined, altered and refined through photo manipulation to create unified compositions.

Each visual then had to coexist with typography, narrative and editorial structure without overpowering the story itself.

The Approach

Imagine.
Construct.
Refine.

01

Understand the story.

Each chapter began by understanding the location, mythology and cultural context before thinking about how the page should look.

02

Build the visual.

Multiple visual references and generated elements were explored, manipulated and combined to construct scenes where direct imagery was unavailable.

03

Make it one world.

Colour, composition, typography and editorial rhythm were refined so different stories still felt like parts of one cohesive visual journey.

Illustrated spread from Ambles Across Godland

The goal wasn't to illustrate mythology literally. It was to create a world where memory, landscape and imagination could exist together.

The Outcome

100 landscapes. 100 narratives. One cohesive book.

The finished publication brings together mythology, cultural history and the landscapes of Uttarakhand through a consistent editorial and visual language. Following its launch, the book received positive feedback for its design and visual treatment — validating the effort invested in turning difficult-to-visualise narratives into a coherent reading experience.
